Current Program Participant
Naureen Ahmed is a senior, double majoring in Sociology and Spanish, at Emory University. After graduation, she plans on obtaining a Masters in Public Health, specifically in health policy and management. During her four years at Emory, Naureen has been involved in a number of clubs and organizations including: Indian Cultural Exchange, Muslim Student Association, South Asian Health Initiative, Minority Pre-Med Society, and Foundation for International Medical Relief for Children. Through these organizations, Naureen has gotten the opportunity to plan events and activities that help bridge the gap that exists between culture and health. From volunteering at health fairs in religious temples to arranging health panels on South Asian health, Naureen has gained a wealth of knowledge and experience that has motivated her to pursue a career in health. She hopes to attend medical school in the future so she can apply and impart all of the lessons she has learned through school and life.

Gabriela Bernal is a graduate student at Georgia Institute of Technology majoring in Biology. She also works on the "Safety of hypertensive hypervolemic therapy for vasospasm in aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage patients with additional unruptured, unprotected aneurysms" project.

Nathaniel Bloodworth is currently a fourth year at the Georgia Institute of Technology, majoring in Biomedical Engineering. Since his freshman year of college, he has been actively involved in research in varying capacities and has worked under the guidance and mentorship of Dr. David V. LaBorde since June of 2009. Nathaniel will graduate in May of 2011 and plans matriculate into an MD/PhD program shortly thereafter, a path that will prepare him to pursue his goal of a career in medicine and medical research.

After receiving his undergraduate degree from Georgia Tech, Joe Chiles took an interest in the medical field. He is currently attempting to gain admission to medical school while also working in a clinical laboratory and teaching the MCAT for Kaplan.

Eugene Chun was born in South Korea and grew up in Atlanta, GA. She graduated from Emory University in May 2010 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English with a concentration in Shakespeare. She currently works for Emory University School of Medicine’s Department of Opthalmology researching the effects of microRNA on the expression of the catalase gene in human ARPE-19 cells. Her ultimate goal is to get an MD/PhD and be involved in Alzheimer's Disease both on the research and medical areas.

Current Program Participant
Riti Mahadevia will begin medical school in August 2011 after graduating from Northwestern University with a major in Economics, minor in Global Health, and a Leadership Certificate. Her current work involves neurosurgery- and neuroscience-related academic and clinical investigations, though her research experience extends to basic science and animal studies at Naval Medical Research Center and Northwestern’s Department of Allergy-Immunology. Outside of academics, she enjoys Indian Dance, Classical, Folk, and Bollywood styles, and tennis.

Kathleen Meaham attended Georgia Tech graduating with both a BS in Electrical and Computing Engineering and Biomechanical Engineering and PhD in Biomechanical Engineering. She currently is a medical student at Emory University, class of 2012.

Aarthi Murugappan is a third year Biology major at Georgia Tech and is from Augusta, GA. During her time at Tech she has participated in various organizations including Student Goverment Association, youth mentoring, and leadership conference planning. She is also involved in undergraduate research and works in a lab focused on human genetics. She loves to travel and spent a semester in Singapore her second year at Tech.

Amit Parekh is a second year pre-med Biomechanical Engineering student at Georgia Tech. His professional affiliations include research at Emory University in the Laboratory of Neural Repair and The Center for Comprehensive Informatics. As unsure as he is of what he wants to be when he grows up, he knows that one day whether he is a doctor, a researcher, both, or finding an outlet through engineering and biomedical applications, he will be doing something in neuroscience or neurosurgery.

Matthew Remmele a recent graduate of the Computational Media program at the Georgia Institute of Technology. His areas of concentration are broadly application development and design. He is currently working to develop and update iPhone applications. He also runs his own WordPress.org video gaming blog. His interests are in line with the work that he does and he feels that he has a strong capacity to produce quality user experience.

He looks to use the exposure he has gained in these settings to enrich his candidacy to potential medical schools and as insight into fields he may look into pursuing later in his career.

Derek Tatum studied Computational Media at Georgia Tech. Having a strong interest in various kinds of multimedia production, he enjoyed taking a few classes about video production, music production, and video games, but was hesitant to embrace computer programming. However, since the time of working with David LaBorde on his Senior Design project, Derek has expanded his interests to included web development and has embraced pHp and mySQL programming as a means by which to create dynamic websites complete with user login systems, shopping carts, and more. He is still interested in multimedia production, however, and hopes one day to produce high-quality media--be it film, music, or video games--that will have a positive and meaningful impact on those who experience it. Andrew Willment received a BS in Natural Sciences from University of Pittsburgh in 2006. Currently,he is pursuing his MD at Emory University School of Medicine. Andrew hopes to work in clinical research throughout his career and plans on getting a Masters in Clinical Research as part of his future training.

Gabrielle Wolozin is pursuing a BSA in Economics and a MBA in Marketing at Emory University. Her research interests include the use of economic modeling for decision making. Specifically, she has researched relative attractiveness to medical students of the field of neurosurgery in the United States. Gabrielle is a member of the Honor Society, Phi Eta Sigma, and a marketing intern for the advertising company, PinPULSE.
